Impressions…

  • We would not have known about Waidhofen and this area if not for someone who attended a conference there. Except for the conference center, it really doesn’t seem like a tourist town.
  • We had reservations for one night each in Gaming and Waidhofen. We normally like to stay 3 nights at each stop, so we drove the “back roads” on our way from Steyr to Vienna to see if we wanted to keep the reservations. We did keep them and it was a good decision. Both places were worth seeing, but small enough that we didn’t feel the need for more time.
  • Das Schloss an der Eisenstrasse is a castle hotel with a combination of old and new. The conference center looks very modern. Our room was very nice.
  • There is a footbridge from the hotel across the Ybbs river to the Rothschild Castle. That’s where the Christmas Market was. It was very small. I couldn’t find any description of it online. It’s only for one weekend. After dark, we were obviously the only tourists there.
  • I saw what appeared to be a restaurant as we were walking around the market. I asked someone at a booth and she said it was very good. Schlosswirt Waidhofen was interesting and the food very good. There was a table of 6-8 people near us. It was like a rotation – some would leave and others come in. They obviously knew each other and were locals. Our server was also the owner or manager. He speaks very good English and told us he lived for a while in Arizona before returning to his home town.

Don’t miss…

  • Schlosswirt Waidhofen

If you drive…

  • Take the “path less traveled” and see some of the beautiful countryside. Just be prepared for very narrow roads with sharp turns (and be prepared to back up if you meet another car on the narrowest sections).
  • For both Gaming and Waidhofen, plan your drive in advance to avoid the narrow streets as much as possible. Our hotel in Gaming was just outside the town and on a 2-lane highway, so it was easy to get to. In Waidhofen, we took a wrong turn and ended up on some challenging streets before finding our way to the hotel.

Beaten path index: 4.3 (See the key here)
