Impressions…

  • Rothenburg is an ancient, historical city surrounded by the original walls (two walls, actually; the second wall surrounds the “suburbs” that developed outside the original wall). It’s one of the most beautiful medieval cities we have seen.
  • It is definitely a tourist attraction. Many shops had signs in German, English, Japanese, Chinese and Russian. We were told that 50% of the tourists who stay in the city are Japanese.
  • The Christmas market is on the large side of the small markets – 50+ stalls.

Don’t miss…

  • Walking tour of the city
  • Kloster-Stüble – one of our favorite hotels ever
  • City wall – views from outside and inside

Next time…

  • Tour the valley below the city

If you drive…

  • Don’t even think about driving inside the wall without assistance.
  • Don’t let that keep you from staying inside the wall. Park in one of the lots just outside (numbered 1-6), walk to the hotel, and ask for their assistance. (Our hostess at Kloster-Stüble drove me to our car and I followed her back to the hotel.)

Beaten path index: 2.5 (See the key here)
