First impressions…

  • Way off the beaten path
  • Nice hotel, but we are on the 4th floor with no lift
  • Reserved parking but about a half-mile uphill
  • Beautiful view on the way in
  • Very small market – only 2 vendor stalls in the square, 10 or so more down by the river

Don’t miss…

  • The castle, but be prepared for a long steep walk
  • The views of the Mosel river and the vineyards that are everywhere

If you drive…

  • Stay in one of the hotels near the square (we really like Hotel am Markt) but park near the river and walk the route to the hotel before trying to drive it
  • Watch for very narrow streets that require you to pull over or back up to let another car go by
  • Pay the extra cost for an automatic transmission rental car
  • There is at least 1 taxi – think about parking somewhere easy and letting the taxi take you and your luggage to and from the hotel (but check with the hotel first – I don’t know where that easy parking is)

Beaten path index…

(See the key here)
Cameras: 4
Language: 4
Path: 5
Tourists: 4.5

Bottom line…

Cochem is definitely worth a repeat visit. It is about as far off the beaten path as any place we have stayed.
