General impressions…
- Lindau is an island city. While there is modern development on the mainland, the island looks much like it did in pictures from the 1500s.
- Lindau is known as a tourist destination – but mostly for German-speaking tourists. We heard very little English spoken.
- The Christmas market is very small – no more than 20 stalls. I think it was the first market we visited and it’s still one of our favorites.
Don’t miss…
- Lindau harbor with its lighthouse and lion statue
- Views of the Alps across the Bodensee (Lake Constance)
- The Christmas market (check dates in advance – they are limited)
- The castle area (see link below; about 1.5 hours from Lindau)
Next time…
- Explore the Bodensee northwest of Lindau
- Check on Bodensee cruises
- Stay at the Hotel Stift (our first hotel in Lindau, located on the town square; unfortunately, it’s closed during the time of the Christmas market)
If you drive…
- Surprisingly easy to drive into the old town
- Public parking at the train station
Beaten path index (See the key here)

Bottom line…
We have been to Lindau 3 times and definitely want to go back
