General impressions…

  • The market is huge – 200+ stalls; during the busy times of day, people are shoulder-to-shoulder in the rows.
  • The market is all in the central part of Old Town Munich – Marienplatz.
  • The twin towers of Frauenkirche are featured on many of the old Munich Child postcards I collect. It was very interesting to see them up close.

Don’t miss…

  • The famous Glockenspiel in Marienplatz
  • The Hofbrauhaus
  • Walking tour of the old town

Next time…

  • Englischer Garten (large park)
  • Viktualienmarkt (food market)
  • Deutsches Museum (huge science and technology museum)
  • Explore some of the small towns near Munich

If you drive…

  • Driving in the Altstadt is difficult – narrow streets, useless GPS…
  • Don’t let that stop you from staying in the Altstadt – just research parking options in advance
  • Don’t believe anything that suggests street parking; if your hotel doesn’t have dedicated parking, check on parking garages.
  • Rent the smallest possible car. Parking spaces are very tight, even in public parking garages.

Bottom line…
Munich is always worth a visit. We have been several times and will go back. It is definitely not off the beaten path, but you can get just a bit off by staying in a small, old hotel in Altstadt. On our next visit, we will get way off the path by driving through the countryside.
