First impressions…

  • We didn’t see enough of Salzburg to do it justice. It’s definitely worth another trip.

Don’t miss…

The highlight was the Augustiner beer hall. There are four huge halls with a small food court. Picture a beer hall that’s family oriented.

  • We saw families come in with picnic baskets and table cloths. You can bring your own food as long as you buy beer or soft drinks.
  • To buy beer, you take a stein from the shelves, rinse it in a communal fountain, and give it to the person tending the kegs.
  • Don’t miss the radish machine. It cuts white radishes into very thin spirals.
  • I watched one older gentleman sitting by himself at a large table. As the hall got more crowded, a family came in, asked if they could sit with him, and he made this welcoming gesture. Within minutes, he was in deep conversation with the family. He had just been waiting for someone to talk to.

Next time…

  • Back to the Augustiner beer hall, of course.

If you drive…

  • Oberndorf is a beautiful small town nearby. The Silent Night Chapel is located there.
