Impressions…
- On every trip, some of our best experiences are completely unplanned. If I had not misinterpreted the information I found, we would have skipped Steyr because most of their Christmas markets are only open on weekends. Then we would have missed
- Probably the best hotel we’ve ever found (by our standards)
- An eccentric Christmas museum with an indoor theme-park train
- Visiting St Michael’s church and hearing the organ (even if only for some beginner’s lesson)
Don’t miss…
- Hotel Mader
- The sunset views over the two river dams
- The train ride at the Christmas museum (The ride is not smooth, so be careful if you have back problems. The manager told us this is a one-of-a-kind ride and I believe it. It takes you through the second floor and the attic of the building, passing by many different Christmas exhibits.)
Next time…
- Christmas museum (again)
- Christmas markets on the Promenade and at the Schloss (castle)
If you drive…
- Plan well in advance and ask the Hotel Mader for a parking space (they only have 4).
- Set your GPS for the APCOA parking garage near the city center, then walk to the hotel and get directions to their parking.
- Or, you may find open parking spaces near the front of the hotel. You have to pay at the machine and the limit is 1 hour.
- I walked from the hotel to their parking before trying to drive there. It isn’t marked and walking there first really helped.
Beaten path index: 4.5 (See the key here)
- Cameras: 5
- Language: 4
- Path: 4
- Tourists: 5
(I’m sure this would change during the actual Christmas market time.)
Bottom line…
We’ll go back, but only when we can get a room at Hotel Mader.
