We visited Cesky Krumlov in 2011 and decided to do a 1-night return visit for one reason – the lighting of the Christmas tree on the first Sunday of Advent. We were there for that in 2011 just by accident and we appeared to be the only non-locals there. It will be interesting to see if it has become more commercialized.

Notes…

  • Cesky Krumlov has been found. There were many more tourists and many more booths than we found in our 2011 visit. I didn’t see any booths with local products or crafts. It was almost impossible to walk around the square before and during the lighting of the Christmas tree.
  • Still, most of the people at the lighting of the Christmas tree appeared to be local or regional.

Don’t miss…

If you drive…

  • We came and left by way of the Czech “back roads”. The countryside is beautiful, but some of the roads are very narrow and winding.
  • Speed limits are not always posted. When you enter a town, the speed limit automatically lowers to about 50 Km/Hr. Use a GPS or mapping app that shows speed limits.
  • We made the mistake of taking the hotel’s advice to drive to the hotel, unload our luggage, and then park. Don’t try it. A GPS is worthless in Cesky Krumlov. Google Maps is a little better, but the streets are very narrow and full of tourists. Park in one of the big lots outside the city center, walk to the hotel, and have them help you get your car to the hotel’s parking site. (We have only stayed at one hotel – I don’t know if they all have dedicated parking areas.)

Beaten path index: 3.5 (See the key here)

  • Cameras: 3
  • Language: 4
  • Path: 5 (the way we came)
  • Tourists: 2

Priority for a repeat visit (1-5): 2

We have enjoyed both of our visits, but there are too many other places we want to go.

The Old Inn

Other than being acquired by a small hotel chain, The Old Inn has not changed. Our room was perfect, with a view of the square. (Not all rooms have a view – look at the room descriptions.) The room was furnished with antiques and the wooden floor appeared to be original. If we do go back, we’ll definitely stay at this hotel again. This was our room – click and drag to see a 360-degree view.
